Where can I get help during an acute depressive crisis?

The following resources are listed in order of their typical medical urgency. If you’re unsure whether there is an immediate danger, call 112 to be safe.

Help by phone and online

  1. 1. Emergency services

Emergency services are available 24/7 at no cost and will arrange the necessary help in an acute medical or psychiatric emergency.

  2. 2. Medical on-call service

The medical on-call service is available 24/7 for urgent health problems that are not immediately life-threatening. They can advise you on what to do next and direct you to an appropriate medical practice or another medical service.

  3. 3. TelefonSeelsorge

TelefonSeelsorge offers free, anonymous support around the clock from trained counselors. They can be there for you in a difficult situation and help you sort through the next steps, but they do not provide emergency medical care.

In-person support near you

  1. 1. Psychiatric emergency department or psychiatric hospital

At a psychiatric emergency department, a psychiatrist can assess your situation on short notice. Depending on your needs, you may receive immediate support, outpatient treatment, or inpatient admission.

  2. 2. Regional psychiatric crisis service

Regional crisis services provide prompt support during mental health and psychosocial crises. Depending on where you live, support may be available by phone, in person at a counseling center, or in some cases through a mobile service. Services and hours vary by region.

  3. 3. Community psychiatric service (Sozialpsychiatrischer Dienst)

The Sozialpsychiatrischer Dienst is a public, free service for people experiencing mental health crises, as well as their family members and others close to them. It offers counseling, helps coordinate additional support, and may also provide home visits depending on the situation. These services are generally not available 24/7.
